Frequently Asked Questions...
What are the tennis rankings on tennis-warehouse.com?
for example some rackets say best suited for a 4.0+ player. what exactly do these numbers mean or at around what skill level do the numbers refer to? and if they say something like 4.0+, can 4.0 players use it or only those above it? thanks
Answer:
They are referring to the NTRP rating system. The system grades players on half point increments from 1.0 to 7.0. A 1.0 is a player who has never touched a racquet, while a 7.0 is in the ATP top 20.
Generally, a 4.0 has been playing for three years or longer and has very solid technique. They play rather agressively and use their serve and one of their groundstrokes as powerful weapons. They can hit rather hard but still consistantly control it to push opponents around the court.
But don't let that be a deal breaker for buying a racquet because Tennis Warehouse's racquet rating system is total crap. It is sheer speculation by someone who spends very little time with the racquet before assigning a reccomended rating. For instance, my racquet said that it was reccomended for 4.5s and above, but I was only 3.5 when I bought it and it has helped me elevate my game to the 4.0 level. If a racquet works for you, it doesn't matter what the rating is.
BUT you should NEVER buy a racquet without demoing it for a while first. Tennis Warehouse has an excellent demo program, and you should definitely take advantage of that before making your decision. Heck, I demoed over 20 racquets before chosing my current frame, some I even demoed twice!
Just out of curiousity, what racquet are you considering purchasing?
